Welcome to your first drum lesson! If youβre new to drumming, donβt worryβIβll guide you through the basics step by step.
Step 1: Learn the Parts of a Drum Kit
A standard drum kit includes:

Bass Drum (Kick Drum) β The big drum played with a foot pedal.

Snare Drum β The main drum that gives a βcrackβ sound, played with drumsticks.

Hi-Hat β Two cymbals that open and close with a foot pedal.

Toms β Additional drums (rack toms & floor tom) for fills.

Crash Cymbal β Used for accents and big hits.

Ride Cymbal β Used for steady beats and rhythms.

Step 2: Holding Your Drumsticks

Matched Grip (Recommended for beginners) β Hold both sticks the same way, using your thumb and index finger as the pivot point.

Traditional Grip β Used in jazz and marching bands, with one stick held differently.
Tip: Keep a relaxed grip to avoid tension and improve speed.

Step 3: Basic Drum Beats
Letβs start with a simple rock beat, also called the basic 4/4 groove:
Bass Drum β Play on beats 1 and 3
Snare Drum β Play on beats 2 and 4
Hi-Hat β Play steady 8th notes (count β1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &β)

Step 4: Playing a Drum Fill
A drum fill is a short break in the beat that makes the rhythm exciting. Try this: Hit the snare on beat 1
Hit the toms on beats 2, 3, 4
End with a crash cymbal on the next 1
Step 5: Practice Tips
Start slow and count out loud (β1, 2, 3, 4β).
Use a metronome to keep time.
